Debit Card Travel Tips

Traveling? Let Us Help You Stay Protected.

Planning a trip? Whether you're heading across the country or overseas, it's important to let us know in advance. TFed has security measures in place that may block international or unusual transactions unless they're pre-authorized.

Here’s how to make sure your TFed Debit Card works smoothly—and safely—while you’re away.

Before You Go

  • Notify TFed of Your Travel Plans
    • In an effort to protect your account from fraudulent transactions, TFed has blocked all Debit Cards from processing foreign transactions. Please be aware that if you are attempting to make a purchase online, over the phone, or traveling abroad, you will need to contact us beforehand to have your Debit Card temporarily activated for foreign use. You can notify us by:
      • Calling (508) 824-6466
      • Using the TFed Card Control App to manage card settings on your own
  • Use the Card Control App to Manage Locations
    • Within the app, you can:
      • Allow international transactions by adding up to 5 approved countries
      • Enable “My Region” or “My Location” to block in-store purchases outside your region or phone’s GPS range
      • Turn your card on/off instantly in case of theft or loss
  • Bring a Backup Payment Option
    • Travel with more than one form of payment in case of unexpected card issues or merchant restrictions.

While You're Traveling

  • Use ATMs from Recognized Institutions
    • Avoid standalone or unbranded ATMs to reduce fraud risk.
  • Watch for Skimming Devices
    • Inspect card readers and ATMs for tampering before inserting your card.
  • Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Banking
    • Use mobile data or a secure connection when accessing your TFed accounts online.
  • Montor Your Transactions
    • Log in to Online or Mobile Banking to check for unauthorized charges.

Visa® Travel Tips

Using your TFed Debit Card internationally? Here's what to know when paying with Visa abroad. Some countries or merchants may have different processing requirements than you're used to, so keep these tips in mind to avoid interruptions while traveling:

  • Memorize your PIN in case it’s required at international merchant terminals
  • If a merchant asks for a PIN but your card doesn’t have one, select “OK” to bypass
  • If your card is declined at a terminal, try withdrawing cash from an ATM

For help while traveling, call the number on the back of your card or visit www.visa.com to find country-specific support numbers.
